This mega hit film set records in 1998 by screening in the most centers for 100 days (63) and collecting the highest amount (about 16 crores) at that time. Vijayanthi Movies produced this grand hit with Gunasekhar as the director.
Ramakrishna (Chiru) is a mechanic whose life changes when he meets Priya (Anjala Zhaveri) at a train station. She sees him and feels some inexplicable connection and runs away with him to flee her father’s (Prakash Raj) goons. They end up living in the forrest with their son, but her father, who is an underworld don, kidnaps her so that he can marry her off to another don’s son. Ramakrishna confronts her father and in the onsueing confusion Priya takes the bullet meant for her husband and dies. Their son because of the shock loses his voice and Ramakrishna is jailed. Prakash Raj takes the boy away to Kolkatta, where the story originally started. Rama Krishna with the help of Soundarya’s character finds his son.
Chiru acted very well in this film as a father in search for his kidnapped son. He has never played this type of role before. The joy of fatherhood and the anger towards his son’s kidnappers were very well depicted by him. Anjala Zhaveri was ok looks wise but her acting was not very good. Soundarya’s talent was wasted. The streets of Kolkatta were very captured and depicted by the art director as well as the cinematographer, Chota K. Naidu, who does a splendid job. Music by Mani Sharma was brilliant and added life to the film, in particular the songs, “O Maria” and “Abbabba Diddu”. Gunasekhar did an adequate job.
