Google Multiple Sign-in, Now Available

Google is rolling out a feature I mentioned in a previous post: signing in to multiple Google accounts simultaneously from the same browser. When you go to the Google accounts page, you might see a new option: "multiple sign-in". If you don't see the new feature, it will probably be enabled soon.


After clicking on the "change" link, Google informs that this is an advanced feature and that it will only work for Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Sites, Google Reader, Google Voice, App Engine and Google Code. When multiple sign-in is enabled, a drop-down is displayed next to your email address at the top of the page, so you can quickly switch to a new account.

"If you use multiple sign-in, the first account you sign in to will be your default account. If you visit other Google products that don't support multiple accounts after you've signed in, you will automatically sign in to your default account for that product. If you sign out of any Google product while signed in to any account, you will be signed out of all your Google Accounts at once." (Google help center)


When you enable this feature, the most significant change is that you'll see a new drop-down next to your email address in Gmail and other supported Google products. Click on the drop-down and you can sign in to a new Google Account without signing out from the previous account.

Another change is that Google's URLs include a different number for each account:http://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/, http://mail.google.com/mail/u/1/, etc.


Google's help center explains that Google's services didn't allow you to sign it to multiple accounts at the same time using the same browser because Google uses sign-in cookies that only let you sign in with one account at a time. Obviously, you can use multiple browsers, Chrome's incognito mode, IE8's "new session" feature, multiple profiles, but the new Google feature makes things easier. Now you can read your messages from two or more Gmail accounts by opening Gmail in multiple tabs.

There are some known issues related to multiple sign-in: this feature is not available on mobile devices, Google Calendar's gadget doesn't work properly in Gmail, you can no longer use offline Gmail and offline Google Calendar and the "note in Reader" bookmarklet only works for the default account.

It's official! Superstar Rajinikanth's Enthiran directed by Shankar and produced by Sun Pictures has made a clean profit of Rs 47 Crores.

Gambhir wants to make an impact in WC

New Delhi: When Gautam Gambhir was dropped from the 2007 World Cup squad, he was so disappointed that he almost quit cricket. As he makes his World Cup debut at home, one of the world's most exciting opening batsmen says he would like to do something "special" for the home crowd, "like my unbeaten 150 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in 2009."

The excitement of the coming tournament is palpable on Gambhir's face as also the pressure of playing at home, although the 29-year-old says he prefers to keep things simple and wants to treat the mega event like any other tournament.

"The World Cup brings with it the pressure of expectations. I want to keep things simple. Naturally, I can't wish away the fact that it's a World Cup but I will try to keep my head clear. I would stick to what I have been doing all these years; the World Cup can't be anything different," Gambhir told IANS in an interview.

"I am excited to play in front of the home crowd. If there is one innings I would like to play in the World Cup, it would be something like my unbeaten 150 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in 2009. It was special as I carried my bat through during the 315-run chase."

The left-handed opener feels it is the "mental preparedness" which will reflect in a player's performance and promises to give his all.

"You can't effect changes in your technique in a month or 15 days' time. Everything depends on your mental toughness and how ready you are to take on the challenge. My attempt would be to give my 100 per cent and I should feel at the end of the day that I have given my best, not that I could have done better," he said.

After his World Cup omission, Gambhir batted with purpose in domestic cricket and the inaugural World Twenty20 the same year proved to be the turning point.

"After being ignored for the World Cup, I did not pick my bat for days. I thought I will never play in a World Cup again. But sometimes lack of options also turns out to be a blessing. Yes, I could have joined my dad's business but I thought how I would face myself in the mirror if I leave cricket only because I was not selected in the World Cup," said Gambhir, whose father runs a successful import-export business.

"I worked hard and realised that the important thing is to score runs. I roughed it out in Ranji Trophy and felt happy scoring runs.

"Things got different after the Twenty20 World Cup. Who would have thought that I would end up as the second highest scorer?"

Since then, Gambhir has nine ODI and Test centuries to his name, was the 2009 ICC Test player and even led the side in the ODI series against New Zealand at home in the absence of senior players last year.

In modern cricket, Gambhir forms an explosive opening pair with friend, mentor and another Delhi player Virender Sehwag and says he is comforted by his presence at the other end.

"Having Viru at the other end is always nice. He knows my game, knows how I mentally approach to situations in a match. We keep talking to each other when we are batting together. I know I can always go up to him and say that I am not comfortable playing a particular bowler and then we decide how to go about it. I don't think I can do that with any other batsman. We have such great understanding," said Gambhir.

The Indian team, ranked second in the ODIs, is touted as the favourites to win the Cup but Gambhir steers clear of naming any favourites.

"In World Cup, five overs can change the game. I feel a No. 1 or a No. 2 side won't take any opponents lightly."

Gambhir says India's performance during the New Zealand tour in 2009 gave them the confidence to beat the top sides in the world. The series was special for Gambhir, who was the highest run-getter in the Test series and resolutely batted for nearly 11 hours at Napier to earn India a draw. India had won both the ODI and Test series.

"The New Zealand tour gave us the confidence that we can overpower other big sides. It proved to be the turning point as we registered victories over South Africa and Australia after that," he said.

Mumbai: India have missed a trick by failing to include a specialist left-arm spinner in their World Cup squad, says former India cricketer Mohinder Amarnath.

Amarnath, now 60, was one of the architects of India's lone 50-over World Cup triumph in 1983, winning man-of-the-match awards both in the semifinal and final to deny Clive Lloyd's West Indies a title hat-trick.

The Indian selectors chose off-spinners Harbhajan Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin and leg-spinner Piyush Chawla in the final 15-man squad for the February 19-April 2 tournament.

While Amarnath, by and large is happy with the squad, he felt left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha's inclusion would have added variety.

"I think it's a good side, a good all-round side they have picked," Amarnath told Reuters in an interview.

"Probably they had a choice to add a left-arm spinner in the side.

"I always believe that a left-arm spinner can play a very important part, especially when you play in a country like India.

"Probably they feel Yuvraj (Singh) can do the job."

With Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan providing the part-time options, Amarnath felt India had too many off-spinners in their side.

"The overseas players are good players of off-spin, rather than left-arm spin, especially on Indian wickets where the ball starts turning," he said.

"There are quite a few off-spinners. Yusuf can bowl off-spin... Raina can bowl off-spin if needed. So probably a left-armer would have been ideal.

"Pragyan has been playing regularly and he has done well and I thought that could have been an option."

The former cricketer, known for the numerous comebacks he made in his playing days, said the spinners would hold the ace during the showpiece event.

"I don't see medium fast bowlers or pacers being very successful in India. The spinning all-rounders are going to play a very important part."

Amarnath argued that there was no such thing as "home advantage" in cricket any more.

"I don't think there is any home advantage to any team," Amarnath said.

"Lots of players have been playing here in the Indian Premier League and the teams are touring India regularly.

"They are aware of the conditions and know how the wicket behaves in India."
